Vietnam has three distinct climate zones. This guide tells Singapore travellers exactly when to go for each destination, and which months to avoid.
Vietnam stretches over 1,600 km from north to south, which means the weather in Hanoi and the weather in Ho Chi Minh City can be completely different at the same time. Understanding this is the most important thing Singapore travellers need to know before booking.
The Three Climate Zones
Vietnam is divided into three climate regions. Each has its own wet and dry seasons.
North (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa): Four seasons. Hot and humid from May to September. Cool and dry from October to April. The best time to visit is October to April.
Central (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue): Two seasons. Dry from March to August. Wet season from September to February, with typhoon risk from October to December. The best time to visit is March to August.
South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc): Two seasons. Dry season from December to April. Wet season from May to November. The best time to visit is December to April.
Month by Month for Singapore Travellers
January
Excellent for Ho Chi Minh City and the south. Cool and dry. Hanoi can be cold at night, averaging 17 degrees Celsius. Da Nang is in the tail end of its rainy season so not ideal.
Best for: Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta
February
Lunar New Year falls in February most years (14 to 22 February 2026). Vietnam is festive and lively, but hotels and domestic transport book out fast. Prices go up. Book at least 8 weeks ahead.
Best for: Ho Chi Minh City. Avoid long-distance travel during the actual New Year period.
March
The sweet spot for Da Nang and central Vietnam. Dry season begins, temperatures are pleasant at 24 to 27 degrees Celsius. Good for Hanoi too. Ho Chi Minh is still dry.
Best for: Da Nang, Hoi An, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City. One of the best months overall.
April
Peak season for Da Nang. Warm, sunny, and dry. Great for beach days and day trips to Hoi An and Ba Na Hills. Hanoi is warming up but still pleasant.
Best for: Da Nang, Hoi An, Hanoi. Note: Reunification and Labour Day surcharges apply from 30 April to 3 May.
May
Hot season begins in the south. Da Nang stays dry but hot. Northern Vietnam heats up. Not the most comfortable for heavy sightseeing in cities.
Best for: Ha Long Bay (weather is good), northern trekking.
June to August
Peak summer. All of Vietnam is hot. Ho Chi Minh City is in the middle of its rainy season with afternoon downpours. Da Nang and central Vietnam are at their hottest and driest. This is when most Singapore families travel due to school holidays.
Tip: If you travel in June to August, book at least 10 to 12 weeks ahead. Hotels fill up fast, especially in Da Nang.
September
The shoulder month. Da Nang’s rainy season is beginning. Ho Chi Minh starts to dry out. Hanoi is still warm but pleasant. National Day surcharges apply from 31 August to 3 September.
Best for: Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta.
October to November
The ideal time for Hanoi and northern Vietnam. Cool, clear skies, and the rice terraces in Sapa are at their most dramatic. Da Nang enters its wettest period, so avoid the beach.
Best for: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa, Ninh Binh.
December
Christmas and New Year is a popular time for Singapore travellers. Ho Chi Minh City and the south are at their best. Hanoi is cool. Da Nang is still wet in early December but dries out by late month.
Note: Christmas and New Year surcharges apply from 24 December 2026 to 3 January 2027.
