Whether you have 4 days or 5, this itinerary covers the key sites, day trips, and practical tips Singapore travellers need to get the most out of Ho Chi Minh City.
Ho Chi Minh City rewards travellers who come with a plan. The city is fast-moving, distances between key sites are manageable, and the day trips out to Cu Chi or the Mekong Delta are among the best in Southeast Asia. But without structure, you can easily lose a day to traffic, indecision, or doing sites in the wrong order.
This itinerary is built specifically for Singapore travellers on 4-day or 5-day private tours. It starts with the assumption that you fly in from Changi and want to use every day well.
Day 1: Arrive and Orient in District 1
Most Singapore flights land at Tan Son Nhat Airport in the early afternoon or evening. Do not try to pack in major attractions on Day 1. Instead, use the afternoon to settle into your hotel and get your bearings in District 1.
District 1 is where most Singapore visitors stay. It is central, walkable from the riverfront, and has the highest concentration of tourist infrastructure. Walk the blocks around Nguyen Hue Walking Street to get a feel for the city’s pace.
In the evening, head to Ben Thanh Market. The indoor section closes in the late afternoon, but the surrounding street stalls stay open into the evening and offer a practical introduction to Vietnamese street food: banh mi, bun bo, and fresh spring rolls at prices that will surprise you.
Day 2: War History and the City’s Difficult Past
Day 2 is best devoted to Ho Chi Minh City’s historical core. Start at the Reunification Palace, the former presidential headquarters of South Vietnam, where the gates were breached in 1975. The building is preserved largely intact and gives a strong sense of the period.
Walk or drive to the War Remnants Museum next. It is one of the most direct and affecting war museums in Southeast Asia. Give yourself at least 90 minutes. Some exhibits are confronting, but the context they provide is worth the discomfort.
Round out the afternoon with a walk through the French colonial district: the Central Post Office, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the surrounding streets. These give Ho Chi Minh City its distinctive visual contrast between colonial-era architecture and dense urban activity.
Day 3: Cu Chi Tunnels in the Morning, Cholon in the Afternoon
Day 3 combines one of the best day trips from Ho Chi Minh City with one of its most undervisited neighbourhoods. Start early: the drive to the Cu Chi Tunnels takes roughly 1.5 hours from District 1 and the site is more comfortable to visit before midday heat sets in.
At Cu Chi, you get a concrete picture of wartime survival: the tunnel entrances, hidden trapdoors, and the underground network that stretched beneath the jungle. Expect to spend two to three hours at the site.
Return to the city in the early afternoon and head to Cholon, the Chinatown district in District 5. This is a different city from the tourist-facing District 1: noisier, denser, and genuinely local. The Thien Hau Temple is the landmark most visitors stop at, but the streets around the wholesale markets are just as interesting. If you are looking for Chinese-Vietnamese food, this is where to find it.
Day 4: Mekong Delta Day Trip
The Mekong Delta makes an excellent full-day excursion from Ho Chi Minh City. The drive to areas like My Tho or Ben Tre takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic.
What you see: floating markets, coconut candy workshops, fruit orchards, and sampan boat rides through narrow waterways lined with dense vegetation. The experience is slow-paced and best described as the counterpoint to the urban energy of Saigon. It is especially popular with Singapore families and travellers who want to see rural Vietnamese life.
Leave early, by 7am if possible, so you reach the Delta before the morning market activity winds down. Return to Ho Chi Minh City by late afternoon.
Day 5 (5D4N Only): Jade Emperor Pagoda and Saigon River
If you have a fifth day, use the morning to visit the Jade Emperor Pagoda in District 3. It is one of the most atmospheric religious sites in the city: a Taoist pagoda filled with incense smoke, intricate carvings, and gilded figures. It is compact enough to visit in under an hour but leaves a strong impression.
Alternatively, those interested in less conventional excursions can consider a trip to Ba Den Mountain in Tay Ninh province, a full-day trip that combines cable car access with a Cao Dai temple visit.
End the trip with an evening Saigon River cruise. The view of the city from the water at night, with the Bitexco Tower lit up and the riverfront busy, is a satisfying way to close out the trip before a morning departure flight back to Singapore.
Practical Tips for Singapore Travellers
Stay in District 1. It is not the only area worth exploring, but it is the most convenient base. Everything in this itinerary is accessible by car from there within 30 minutes, and the evening food options are within walking distance.
Start early every day. Ho Chi Minh City traffic worsens significantly between 7.30am and 9am. If your day trip requires a morning drive, leaving at 6.30am makes a meaningful difference in how your day flows.
Halal food is available. There are halal restaurants and stalls near Ben Thanh Market and in District 1. Your guide can direct you to appropriate options. The Mekong Delta and Cu Chi days require some forward planning if you keep halal, so flag this when booking.
What to skip on short trips. Dam Sen Water Park, Sky Deck at Bitexco, and the zoo are fine add-ons but not essential. If you are on 4 days, prioritise the war history, Cu Chi, and the Mekong Delta.
