Mountains, river karsts, and limestone sea: northern Vietnam's three best destinations each offer something completely different. Here is how to combine them in one trip.
Most first-time visitors to northern Vietnam pick one or two destinations. Experienced travellers know the three-way combination is where this region really delivers. Sapa gives you mountains, ethnic minority villages, and trekking through terraced rice fields. Ninh Binh gives you riverine karst scenery: the same limestone formations as Ha Long Bay but set among rice paddies rather than open water. Ha Long Bay gives you the cruise, the karst seascape, and the overnight experience that is unlike anything else in Vietnam. Together, they cover every version of what northern Vietnam can be.
This itinerary works best over 8 to 9 days. It is suited to couples and families who want genuine variety rather than spending a whole trip in one style of landscape.
Why This Combination Works
Each destination is a different type of landscape and a different pace of travel. Sapa is active: you are on your feet, on mountain paths, at high elevation, surrounded by Hmong and Dao villages. Ninh Binh is calm: a slow sampan boat through river caves, ancient pagodas, and flat paddies with karsts erupting from them. Ha Long Bay is the cruise: you are afloat, meals are served to you, the pace is whatever you make of it.
Moving through all three gives the trip a natural rhythm: arrive and acclimatise in Hanoi, push out to the mountains, return and slow down at Ninh Binh, then end on the water. Each leg feels earned rather than arbitrary.
The Recommended Route
Day 1: Arrive Hanoi
Fly in from Singapore, roughly two to three hours on Singapore Airlines or Scoot. Transfer to your hotel in the Old Quarter. Settle in, eat well, walk around. Hanoi orients you to northern Vietnam before you head out of the city.
Days 2–3: Sapa (overnight train or private van)
Getting to Sapa takes roughly nine hours. The overnight train from Hanoi is the classic option: you board at Hanoi station in the evening, sleep in a soft-sleeper cabin, and arrive in Lao Cai in the early morning, where a van takes you up to Sapa town. It is atmospheric and saves a hotel night. The trade-off is sleep quality; the train is comfortable but not perfectly smooth.
Private van is the alternative: a 5.5-hour drive, usually done as an early morning departure to arrive by lunch. Faster and more flexible, particularly for families with young children.
Spend two nights in Sapa. Day 2 afternoon is orientation: walk Sapa town, visit the market, check in with your guide. Day 3 is the main trek through Muong Hoa Valley to a Hmong or Red Dao village, depending on what your guide recommends and current access conditions. Sapa trekking is most rewarding from September to November (golden rice terraces) and March to May (green paddies, clear skies). See our Sapa vs Ha Long Bay guide if you are deciding between them rather than combining.
Day 4: Return to Hanoi
Travel back to Hanoi by van, arriving in the afternoon. Use the evening for the Old Quarter: the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology if you have energy, or simply eat and rest. This transition day is built in; do not try to add sightseeing on top of a five-hour drive.
Day 5: Ninh Binh
Depart Hanoi early by private van (two hours south). The Trang An boat tour is the centrepiece: a 2.5-hour sampan ride through a UNESCO-listed complex of rivers, caves, and temples. The rower uses their feet on the oars, which is worth watching. After Trang An, visit Bich Dong Pagoda, a three-tier temple built into a limestone cliff, or Mua Cave viewpoint for aerial views over the paddies. Return to Hanoi in the evening.
Ninh Binh is a day trip from Hanoi, not an overnight destination, for most itineraries. It is possible to stay overnight in Tam Coc if you want more time, but a full day covers the highlights comfortably. See our Ninh Binh guide for a deeper breakdown.
Days 6–7: Ha Long Bay Overnight Cruise
Depart from Hanoi mid-morning. The private van drive to Tuan Chau Harbour takes 3.5 hours. Board the junk boat around midday, have lunch on the water, and spend Day 6 afternoon kayaking, visiting Sung Sot Cave, and watching sunset from the sundeck. Day 7 begins with sunrise on the bay, breakfast, and a final swim or kayak before the boat returns to harbour by noon. You are back in Hanoi by late afternoon.
For a full breakdown of cruise tiers, what to pack, and which caves to expect, see our Ha Long Bay overnight cruise guide.
Day 8 (8D7N): Depart Hanoi
Last morning in Hanoi. If your flight is in the afternoon, there is time for a final Old Quarter wander or a sit-down breakfast at a proper cafe before transfer to the airport. Evening flights work well for this itinerary.
Day 9 (9D8N option): Extra Hanoi Day
Adding a ninth day allows a second Hanoi culture day, which most travellers find worthwhile. The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, Hoa Lo Prison, and the French Quarter all reward time that a one-night Hanoi stop does not allow.
How Many Nights at Each Stop
The minimum viable breakdown for 8D7N: 2 nights Hanoi (split across arrival and return days), 2 nights Sapa, 1 night Ninh Binh if you want to extend there (otherwise day trip), 1 night Ha Long Bay cruise. For 9D8N, add either a second night in Sapa for a longer trek or a second night in Hanoi for more city time.
Do not compress Sapa to one night. The logistics (overnight train or long drive) make one night in the mountains feel like a lot of effort for very little time. Two nights minimum gives you a proper trek day without rushing back.
Practical Logistics for Singapore Travellers
Sapa transport: Most private tour operators book the overnight train for the romance of it and the efficiency of saving a night’s accommodation. If you have children under 10 or anyone with back problems, the private van is the better call.
Ninh Binh: It works as a day trip from Hanoi. Two hours each way, a full day of sightseeing, and back by 7pm. No need to book a separate hotel unless you specifically want to slow down.
Ha Long Bay cruise: Book at the 4-star tier for this combination trip. After two days of active trekking and a full day at Ninh Binh, you want a comfortable boat with a proper bed. Luxury tier is worth considering for couples on a celebratory trip.
Best season for the whole combo: March to May is the only window where all three destinations perform simultaneously. Sapa in December is cold and foggy. Ha Long Bay in December is rough. March-April gives you clear mountain views in Sapa, calm seas on Ha Long Bay, and the paddies of Ninh Binh still green.
